Pre- and Postnatal Yoga

Prenatal

From “Rock and Hug” to the “Mango Sunrise” to a “Dip in the Sea”, the rhythmic pulse of these eight flow sequences within Prenatal Yoga with Portia Brockway open us to the gifts of our body/breath/mind presence.

The practice of yoga during pregnancy is perhaps the most helpful exercise a woman with child can undertake. It is slow, strong and gentle. It prepares the woman’s body and breath to open as it will need to open during labor and childbirth. Yogic techniques of breath, movement, sound and visualization provide a confident basis for smooth passage through this most powerful of life experiences. All exercises are modified through to term.

May the sounds and rhythms of the sea inspire you with serenity!

Postnatal

There’s nothing like the sound of Flamenco to describe the alacrity of a baby’s energy, punctuated with emotion, and that’s where the fun begins, with this Mom/Baby Yoga session. We start with some poses just for the mother, followed by tandem moves for you both, and, for the fortunate, a Deep Relaxation at the end.

Remember that the time after giving birth is one of sea change. Yoga restores you, inside and out. Return your body to a state of ease. Mother-baby partner moves will bond and delight you both, increasing today’s bliss index factor!

How It All Came To Pass

In August of 2006, our niece, Portia Brockway of Yoga in Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA, sent us a couple of instructional CDs she had recorded for her clients interested in pursuing yoga. She expressed interest in developing some DVDs on the subject, and I, as a retired academic surgeon with a growing interest in creating instructional documentary videos, took the bait.

So, with my creative son-in-law Drew Sauer of Ann Arbor, MI, we traveled to Cape Cod and Cambridge, MA in October, 2006, where we, along with Ethan Goldhammer of CCTV, Cambridge, assisted Portia in filming 27 hours of sunrises, sunsets, moonlight, fireplace and candle flames, ocean waves, and 5 different yoga sessions. And we threw in a delightful interview between Drew and Portia. Thus The Winds of Grace Collection was born.

In this Collection, including Pre-and Postnatal Yoga with Portia Brockway, a 2 DVD set; Slow Flow Yoga for the Mature; and From the Unreal to the Real, you will see and hear the results of these labors. Portia has served as the Director and Co-Producer of this project. Her father, Ralph Brockway of Baltimore, who has practiced yoga for 50 years, along with Drew, have served as artistic consultants. And I, as Co-Producer, have been very happy to be a part of this exciting adventure.

Enjoy!
